Otter friendly stream
The Brook in Springfield was identified as an area for improvement, and excavation works were carried out in January 2013, commissioned by the Council. Blakedown Brook, now has a more naturalised look, with improved opportunities for wildlife to migrate into different areas of the countryside. Due to various developments, like roads and housing, many animal species become isolated in 'pockets of countryside'. Wildlife corridors allow species to re-connect and this helps with the genetic diversity, and helps to re-establish various animal populations. Below are photos pre works and post works.
Above, the weir prevented the movement of animals. Below the changes, no weir, and fingers crossed we may even see evidence of otters and voles travelling through the brook ;0)As you can see, works have now been completed on Blakedown Brook. A now more naturalised look, with improved opportunities for wildlife to migrate into different area of the countryside.
